When Napping Isn’t Enough

When one is expecting their first child, it’s a mad dash to the cinemas before the child arrives.  My wife and I saw two movies last week and oddly enough each movie’s featured characters were pregnant.  That should make it very easy to know which movies we observed.

The first one we saw was Knocked Up.  Okay, this movie isn’t going to change the world or anything, but I caught myself laughing out loud during most of the movie.  I find this to be a very good quality about a movie.  If you’re not pregnant or not having sex, the movie should still be to your liking.  The movie is rated R, yet there was a mom and a dad there with their three kids.  I’m guessing the kids were about 7, 10, and 12 years old.  I will go on record saying the movie is a bit crude and therefore not appropriate for pre-teens.  Perhaps I’m a prude, but the kids were a tad too young for this flick.  Two thumbs up on this movie for entertainment purposes and eye candy.

The second movie was saw on Friday night after work.  It’s the new Angelina Jolie flick, A Mighty Heart.  Wow, this movie was really good.  I was totally engrossed in the story and loved the way it movie unfolded.  Granted I knew the outcome of the story because I watch the news yo, yet they pieced this movie together really well.  I know Angelina Jolie can be a polarizing celebrity, but she really is talented too.  Be advised this movie is a tearjerker and will bring a pregnant person to tears easily.  Non-pregnant types will more likely than not cry too, consider yourself warned.

——————

Time for my PSA (public service announcement) regarding childbirth.  I would be lying to you, my faithful readers, if I said the anticipation of becoming a dad is all about unicorns, pink stuff, and ultrasounds.  I may be in a wee bit of a funk.  Not in a bad way mind you, but I’m a bit unmotivated knowing the life I’ve known for the past 16 years is about to change.  My wife and I had a candid chat about our future Saturday morning.  We’ve caught ourselves getting so wrapped up in Anna’s arrival in this world, that we’re not pampering ourselves enough.  I think this is what makes my relationship with Mrs. Lessinges so special… we can have these kinds of discussions and be on the same page.

I’m very sappy these days.  For example, I broke into tears as I drove across this bridge on my way to get bagels Sunday morning.   Not that driving across a floating bridge makes me weepy, but I spied a guy running who I usually see in my neighborhood.  This dedicated man runs everywhere and he’s got to be in his late 50’s to early 60’s.   There’s something so inspirational about this guy pounding the pavement that brings a smirk to my face.  What I love most about this guy, he’s always wearing the same running outfit.  I can’t blame him though because the Adidas shorts he wears are damn cool… I just might own the same pair.

Yes! Absolutely don’t neglect your couple experience once you have your beautiful baby. It will be tempting to make everything about the baby, but don’t forget the relationship that made that baby possible!

  2. egan says:

Tori – the good thing is, my wife and I have a pretty well established track record here. We didn’t neglect our single lives when we got married, so I don’t anticipate it happening after Anna is born. Time will tell.

  3. tori says:

Also? I miss Amanda and all, but look at that. I was first!
I also love that you are so in tune with your emotions. I am also dying to see Knocked Up. I would not, however, bring any of my children to see it!

  4. egan says:

Tori – yes, I’m missing Amanda too, but it did allow you to grab the top spot. I’ve got an eye on her blog in the event there’s any odd stuff over there. Let’s hope she’s relaxing and enjoying her time in the desert. Yeah, don’t bring the kids to that movie. Lots of jokes and plenty of boobie shots too. A baby crowning too!

  5. qt says:

I agree, Knocked Up is not a movie for children of that age! That being said, I thought it was hilarious.
It is really cool that you and the Mrs. can have such honest conversations about emotions that could be difficult to deal with. If anything, make sure you hold on to that over the next few years of a roller coaster ride.

  6. that’s so sweet that you cried over something so non-baby related, even though deep down, it is baby related. If that makes sense.

  7. Melissavina says:

Knocked up is great, but shouldn’t be viewed by chillens, that’s for sure. I am dying to see A Mighty Heart, and am also interested to see if Angelina Jolie is actually a good actor.
You are indeed in for a big change. Can’t wait to see it unfold on this here blog.

  8. Cherry Ride says:

What kind of idiot parents bring their three children to a movie called “Knocked Up.” That kind of stuff drives me crazy. A few weeks ago I saw “28 Weeks Later” and a guy a few rows in front of me brought his little girl, who was no more than 6 years old.

  9. chikken says:

It is going to be a trip.
I’m rooting for August 8 you know. 8 is a magical number.
    And that’s my birthday.
Then you can name her ANNA CINDRA

  10. Candace says:

I remember doing that with MuNKi before and right after Mollusc was born. (when she was tiny enough to nurse and sleep all the way through)
Mollusc’s first 3 films were all Hugh Grant films, as I recall. The Englishman who went up a hill and came down a mountain. SOmehing about having a baby, and it had a big purple dino Barney rip-off, and er, something else. . . (4 Weddings?)

  11. Candace says:

Glad to see that your blog no longer trusts that I’m not a robot. Because I just love a good word verif.

  12. brookem says:

it will indeed be life changing, but in such a good way. and we’ve already discussed this some.
i got teary a spec just LOOKing at the picture, and readng about that guy. so there ya have it.

  13. Pants says:

I’m so excited for you and Mrs. Lessinges to welcome Anna. I can only imagine how exciting (and scary, though good scary) it must be to have such an incredible life altering experience around the corner.

  14. Amy says:

Now I want to go see a movie. Perhaps I can fit one into my schedule by mid-August. A trip to the movies for me is about a 5 hour time commitment. The closest theater is an hour away.

  15. Pants says:

I thought that “Knocked Up” was HILARIOUS! Definitely not life altering but it was great to laugh so much. I concur with you that it was too much for pre-teens…I mean, hello?! Full crowning shot! Ack!

  16. Airam says:

I haven’t seen those movies although they look like great ones to catch.
Egan I haven’t known you for very long but as we’ve gotten to know eachother on and off “the blog”, I am just amazed at how amazing you are. Everytime we talk I’m more and more convinced of the incredible parent that you will be.
I know what you mean about seeing people, strangers really, who give you inspiration. It’s funny because this man is doing what he’s always been doing … but at the same time he has no idea the effect that he might have on other people.
You are also that man. You give me inspiration when I hear you talk so lovingly about your plans for the future with your wife and Anna.
    You’re awesome Wiigan.
(you never cease to make me smile when reading your posts)

  17. brandy says:

I’m not even going to beat myself up for my lack of stalking today. I had a few good reasons. I WILL say that I really liked “Knocked Up”, but seriously? Taking kids?? I lost count of how many F-bombs I heard. I do think however, the delivery scene should be shown to any teenager who doesn’t factor ‘delivery’ into wanting a ‘cute baby’, it just makes sense. As for “A Mighty Heart”, I just read the book last month and loved it so I can’t wait to see the movie.

  18. brandy says:

And I’m glad you and the missus had a chat and found yourself on the same page. Adding that to the reasons I like her. And yes, this two comments at once is my lazy attempt at stalking. I will try harder tomorrow. Because seriously, I can’t let Amanda down.

  19. Airam says:

Brandy I will do my best to help you out. Although I don’t have access to any blogs at school I can only do this in the evening. And then it will look like I’m having a conversation with myself. Oh well .. must now let Amanda down.

  20. carrie says:

I think you guys should pamper yourselves as much as possible while you still can!
And that nursery, it is beautiful. I can see why you like to sit in there, awaiting the arrival.
Enjoy these moments. And each other.

  21. meno says:

What i want to know is; what bagels are so good that you would drive over to the dark side to get them?
I think you and the Mrs. will be knocked for a loop with the baby for a little while, and then you will adjust and be fine. I swear it’s true.

  22. patches says:

Baby crowning! Seriously. I might be a little squeamish for that. I practically pass out when I see a hair-ball.

  23. brookem says:

i can try and help out this week too.. but it looks like Popular Egan is doing just fine.

  24. Brrrr says:

    1. I saw Knocked Up this weekend and agree that it was a great movie! It’s not funny in just a couple of spots, but funny the whole way through. Great writing and great acting.
    2. I’m glad to hear someone saw and enjoyed A Mighty Heart. I am NOT an Angelina Jolie fan but I may have to get over that because I really want to see the movie.
    3. Best advice I’ve ever heard “Nothing should come first other than your marriage. Not even your children.” Sounds harsh, but it makes sense the longer and harder you think about it. If you neglect each other … you neglect the marriage and don’t do your family any favours.
    4. This is my first ever comment in point form. Not sure why.

  25. brandy says:

Thanks Airam, I’m feeling a bit more confident about this. Just can’t let down Amanda down you know?

  26. ChickyBabe says:

Hmm… why do expecting couples always go to the movies before their child is born…

  27. egan says:

qt – we’ll hold on to those moments the rest of our life. If we don’t have each other, then we don’t have much. I’m glad you liked the movie too. I loved it.
steppingoverthejunk – na, that totally makes sense and is actually baby related. I was overcome with emotion because my life is pretty sweet right now.
Melissavina – I’m not a lover of all things Angelina, but she was great in this movie and others I’ve seen her in. Well worth it to see this movie and the story is very captivating. You will see it all unfold here in a few short weeks.
Cherry Ride – this person probably doesn’t want to pay for a babysitter or doesn’t pay attention to movie ratings.
Chikken – ha, I have your birthday marked on the calendar. Mrs. Lessinges’ brother’s bday is on the due date.
Candace – I remember the Hugh Grant movie of which you speak. I saw that movie on date in college and that date didn’t go so well considering I forgot my wallet. Great memories.
    Candace – I’m glad you’re not actually a robot.
Brookem – the bridge takes about 10 minutes to cross on a bike so running across it isn’t fast and it’s pretty windy. That guy is a total machine. It’s okay to cry.
Pants – I held a three week old baby girl tonight and swaddled her too. That was pretty fun and then I hung out with her 22 month old sister in her room. I think I’m ready now to embark on the girl raising journey.
Amy – wow, that’s not close at all. Maybe the cops can escort you to the movies?
Pants – yes, it was damn funny. I don’t get why those kids were there. So not appropriate for pre-teens. Lazy parents.
Airam – how much do I owe you for that comment? Seriously, that was a very flattering comment. Thanks for saying such a thing. I’m glad I inspire you, yet that’s not my intention. I’m here to share my life and if it inspires you… win win for all parties. I love your heartfelt comment Airam! Grazie! Smiling is a good thing right?
Brandy – I’m glad you mentioned the crowning thing. Yes, it’s not all about cute babies and breastfeeding. I think it’s important for middle school and high school kids to see this stuff. I know it scared me straight to see pregnancy videos in high school. Maybe it’s why I couldn’t get intimate with a girl then. Who knows. Oh yeah, they said “fuck” a lot in that movie. No worries on the stalking front.
Brandy – you’re doing a fine job. Amanda would have buttered Mrs. Lessinges up too so you did well. Chatting about raising kids before they arrive is good right?
Airam – do you talk to yourself? So far Tall Chick/Candace is doing a great job in Amanda’s absence.

  28. egan says:

Carrie – I’m glad you like the nursery. It’s a relaxing place to hang out right now. I’m still a bit in disbelief someone will call that room theirs and may slam that door. We will pamper each other just as we currently do. Thanks for commenting.
Meno – I think you’re right about how Mrs. Lessinges and I will do with the baby. Well you have a general idea where I live right? It’s faster for me to get on the freeway and visit Mercer Island than it is to go to either the U Village or West Seattle for bagels. Capiche? I loved that you called me out on this. You know I was born and raised on The Eastside right?
Patches – are you sure you get squeamish? I’ve seen your many works of art. I don’t believe you.
Brookem – don’t be afraid of the rocks that I got, I’m still, I’m still E-Fo from the block…. I love to quote J-Lo as often as possible so there.
Brrrr – hello and welcome to my blog! That’s point about nothing coming between you and your spouse is absolutely critical. I believe that one big time. They learn from how how mom and dad treat each other. They’re smart people and totally pick up on all the vibes being sent out. A sound relationship between my wife and I is the best bit of parenting we can do. Thanks for pointing this out. Yes, go see the Angelina Jolie movie. You’ll forget it’s her in the movie. The story is compelling. Thanks for your comment.
Brandy – you’re doing Amanda proud already by mentioning her here. She will feel the love.
ChickyBabe – are you serious about this? Well once you have a kid it’s a bit tougher to get out of the house. Eventually you will find a babysitter and can see a movie, but it’s a nice couples activity. For my wife and I it’s a great reminder of how things all began. So seeing a movie before Anna is born is a nice treat. Does that make any sense Chicky?

  29. mez says:

The worst I saw was parents bringing their 6-8 year olds to see The Passion of the Christ. Poor kids, the parents should be bloody crucified!

  30. brookem says:

i love that you just busted out a freaking j-lo song. wondaful.

  31. Candace says:

You’re listening to Sting aren’t you? I know you think he’s dreamy.
Tu brise mon coeur. . .

  32. furiousball says:

Oh, you’re right and you’ll hit some more troughs as a new father too. Just wait when you realize that your slice of the Mommy pie keeps getting smaller. That was a tough one for me.
The parents taking their children to the R rated movie is why I always bring a spray bottle of holy water mixed with windex (stings more and if there’s a dirty theater window I can clean while not doing anyting).

  33. Rachel says:

Knocked up was a great movie. There were some parts that were definitely not for kids ears or eyes (opening the door when someone is having a child is NOT a good idea).
I haven’t seen A Mighty Heart. I have to go see Evan Almighty first.
Make sure you get all of the movies you can get in before the baby comes. Afterwards they are few and far between unless you have people scrambling to babysit.

  34. tori says:

I checked in this morning to see how we are all doing filling in for Amanda. I think we are all stalking well…just a little pep talk to keep us going here. When does Amanda come back? I miss her!
On a serious note here, having my kids changed who I was for the better. I always want them to see me being the best me that I can be, and want to do everything I can to encourage them to explore their interests. I also want them to have fun and be kids.
From everything I have learned about you so far, you and your wife are both going to be awesome at that. You are good at communicating with each other, know how to be on the same page with each other, and both qualities are extremely important when trying to raise kids. I can not wait to hear your wonderful insights once your baby is born. I am abolutely certain that both you and your wife will be awesome parents.
Too bad I don’t live near you because I would love to snuggle your baby and breathe in that wonderful baby smell! My “baby” is 3, and while I still think he smells terrific (especially after his bath) he is lacking that baby smell that I love and miss.

  35. tori says:

Perhaps I should have broken that up into several different comments both for more stalking, and also for ease in reading. Sorry about that.

  36. tori says:

I probably also should have spell checked all of that.

  37. justrun says:

My gosh, Egan, there are just some days that I come here and wonder if maybe there is a brother of yours that I could meet who would be very similar in thought and action. But then I realize that sounds a little strange and a little more “stalky” and I don’t want to come off that way. So, I’ll just say I think it’s cool that you can go over all this in your mind and have (or at least appear to have) a good balance of reality and all that other cute stuff too. (Hehe.)

  38. Nessa says:

Well, it is true that your life changes when you have children, which is as it should be and so you have a right to be in a funk. Change is always a tad depressing.

  39. Churlita says:

I think it’s the fear of the unknown that can funk you out. You know things will change, but you don’t know how.

  40. liv says:

It changes–yes, everything does. But, like discussed early on in the pregnancy (I think via Meno or something), things change for GOOD. We always think about what we love that may not be there anymore, but truly, there are going to be new things to love. Things you don’t love too, like poo, but darling Monkey Boy, it all comes out in the wash.

  41. HLOGS says:

Hola Egan! ARM has just checked in..having a blast in Vegas. She hasn’t gone to the cave yet, and she can’t check in because it costs a dollar a minute, by use of credit card only, and she’s not that addicted yet! So, she called me and I read her the comments. She is currently people-watching at Mandalay Bay and is looking at a famous master-debater. He’s bald.

  42. brandy says:

Okay, now I’m not which is worse- knowing that kids were at the theatre watching “Knocked Up”, or today seeing a mom sit in a parking lot with her windows rolled up chain smoking with her kids in the car. Seriously people. Why not just inject the smoke right into their little lungs? (And yes, I feel it okay to mention this here because it’s like, me giving you a tip on parenting Egan, sorta like a ‘what not to do’ list. Not that I think you would ever suffocate your children with second hand smoke, I’m just saying)

  43. Trick says:

Hey sappy sappo, so long no talk. I am so excited for you. It’s getting so close. I love the white furniture. I did my little girls room with white too, just seems so sweet for a girl. It’s been a while since I caught up on you so I have A LOT of reading to do to catch up!
    Trick’s best advice:
    Just remember to breath

  44. Airam says:

Did HLogs just say that Amanda is looking at a famous masturbator???

  45. egan says:

Mez – I couldn’t have come up with a better response. Crucify them!
Brookem – just don’t ask me to bust out MC Hammer pants.
Candace – the day I listen to Sting by choice is the same day I swear off dairy products for good. So not gonna happen.
Furiousball – you love Windex don’t you? I bet you love the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding too.
Rachel – go see A Mighty Heart. It was really good if you ask me. I don’t know what it is, but I have zero desire to see Evan Almighty.
Tori – you really do love babies. It’s so evident from your comment how much you adore your kids. The fact it has made your life better speaks volumes about you as a person. New baby smell is awesome. I held a three week old girl last night. Her sleepy eyes are so damn cute.
Tori – nah, you’re doing a great job as is. Kudos! Is stalking a bad thing?
Tori – did you misspell something?
Justrun – I love that you confessed this in your comment. So cool of you, big bonus points for this. I have one single brother. He and I are quite different though. That’s a story for another day. Thank you so much for saying what you did and no, it’s honestly not creepy.
Nessa – thanks for understanding. It’s not a bad thing by any stretch, more like an adjustment of sorts.
Churlita – yep, not exactly sure what my life will be like three months from now. That’s the toughest part from my perspective.
Liv – the poo bit, was that a pun? I like it very much. Yes, it does all come out in the wash. Change will be good, I’m ready for a new stage of my life as things are a bit stagnant these days. A change is very imminent.
HLOGS – awesome awesome awesome! Thank you kindly for the Amanda update. Mandalay Bay is a great spot for people watching. I hope she’s outside near the wave tank. That’s where I located myself last year. I got heaps of digits.
Brandy – the smoke filled car scenario is so much worse. That’s their health she’s messing with. I see that from time to time and it makes me sick. It’s not fair to the kids to force your habits on them. You may not be able to stop smoking, but don’t smoke with all the windows rolled up. Yikes!
Trick – whoa, I remember you. I’m glad you approve of the room. White furniture is pretty nice. Breathing practice will come in handy for sure. Glad to see you back.

  46. egan says:

Airam – yes, she did. I tried to ignore that part of the comment because it conjured up some rather interesting images. I’m glad Amanda is doing well though.

  47. Candace says:

Now tu really really brise mon coeur. Or would it be ma cour? Is it feminine because I’m a girl, or masculine because the heart is? Crap, I like Chinese so much better.
I can’t believe you don’t adore the aural gorgeosity that is Sting. You’re killing me.

  48. Michelle says:

oh man, when I went to see Knocked Up, I was laughing so hard! I think there were parts where the audience was actually laughing AT ME for laughing so hard. I’ve been wanting to see A Mighty Heart, since before it was released, but for some reason the theaters around me aren’t showing it yet – weird.
P.S. the baby room picture from your previous post is ADORABLE. And I love those new rocker chairs – they’re safer. I used to accidentally) smush my sister’s fingers in the old-fashioned one we used to have when we were little. Sometimes she’d rock in it and it would fall over onto her. It’s only funny now because she’s alive and has all fingers toes…but like I said, good choice in getting the safer version 🙂

  49. ChickyBabe says:

I am serious, yes. It makes sense. Funny how it is a trend.

  50. sizzle says:

you and your wife have a great relationship- it’s so good that you can have those chats. and being emotional makes perfect sense!

  51. egan says:

Candace – the “coeur” in French is masculine, le coeur. If you’re saying “my heart” though, the possessive matches the gender of the person saying it. So I would say “mon coeur” and you would say “ma coeur”. Does that make sense? Sting sucks big giant donkey balls.
Michelle – I’m glad you like Knocked Up. It was a fun movie to see. The movie A Mighty Heart seems to be in smaller release. It’s going to be the talk of the town come Oscar time, or so I believe. Thanks for the nice comments about the nursery. Smashing fingers is never a good thing. I did it many times.
ChickyBabe – yes, if you like movies you know the prospects of seeing a movie as a couple will take a backseat for awhile.
Sizzle – yep, we do a pretty good job at communicating with one another. She’s a special woman.

  52. mez says:

On the movie thing, every single couple I know who has had a baby in the past year does not go to the movies anymore – especially the mums.
Go NOW and go OFTEN! That’s all I have to say about that.

  53. Amanda says:

“If you’re not pregnant or not having sex, the movie should still be to your liking.”
    I love this disclaimer.
I also love that you and Mrs. L have such an open line of communication with one another. Really, this is awesome and another valuable trait to have as parents.
AND I love that Brandy was really worried about letting me down. NEVER! And yeah, Tall chick is back!! Woot! Woot!

  54. Amanda says:

I have a lot of love right now…apparently.

  55. You’re crying now? Just wait. Just you wait. You are in for SO much more crying as a father!!
