From the Beginning

Pensive_2so there was a boy who became a dad and he happened to have a blog

Monkey Boy, how are you doing? To be honest, it’s a bit rougher than I thought it might be. I’m optimistic things will smooth out a bit. The emotional ups and downs rival that of pregnancy. I know, I’m not the one who carried the child for nine months or the who has to breastfeed.

Is being a daddy all you wished for and more? Yes, I really am enjoying seeing the world from a different perspective. Whether that be parents, grandparents, strangers with kids, etc. These early weeks are hard, but they are still rewarding in their own right.

How is your wife recovering? Mrs. Lessinges is recovering quite nicely. C-sections are a bitch if you factor in the added responsibility of breastfeeding and becoming a parent. It’s very overwhelming, but my wife is doing a tremendous job. She’s on her feet and walking a bit more each day.

Are you able to smile again? Yeah, I’ve smiled a lot more in the past few days. Perhaps it was good to blog about how laughter has been harder to find. It allowed me to put my guard down a bit more often. Many of you have done a great job encouraging me to laugh often and I thank you for this.

What’s the longest you have slept? seven hours a few nights ago. Anna rocked the deep r.e.m. sleep that night. Her daddy does love R.E.M. lots. For the record, Anna’s first official song she heard was a Rolling Stones song. Grandpa will be happy to learn this.

How are you managing your stress? sneaking peeks at blogs and humoring myself while changing diapers. It’s great fun to talk to a child who has no idea what you’re saying.

Do you even know what day of the week it is? thankfully my trusty Timex watch keeps me on track and the looming Return to Work date of September 4th.

You really only bathe 6 times a week? correct and that was before baby arrived. One shower a day and I tend to skip a day on the weekend. Now if I go for a late night run or play soccer, I just might shower afterwards. It depends how offensive I am.

What’s a typical day like for you? changing diapers, holding baby, taking pictures of baby, pampering wife, kissing Anna as often as possible, listening to sounds of the womb, fretting, and some time on the internet.

How do feel when someone says “that’s a tiny thing”? some woman really did say that about Anna while in Babies R Us this week. I had to bite my tongue since I’m attempting to set a good role for my daughter.

When do you go back to work? never? most likely will return September 4th unless I can find a super wicked job I can do from the home before then. Yeah, September 4th.

Will you ever do another triathlon? man, who knows. I think I will be back on track next year. It’s really hard to believe almost a year ago I was freaked out about the Ironman. Now when I see people running, swimming, or riding a bike…I get a tiny bit jealous. That part of my life will return soon enough.

*P.S. Patches, I love you girl!

Hey! Scott just told me your news so I had to visit your blog. Congratulations to you and N-Po! I am so tickled, it’s a long way from the yard-a-pults and monkey-boying of the past. take care and happy parenthood!

  3. *pixie* says:

    “From the beginning”
Becoming a parent really is like a rebirth, isn’t it?
I’m off to shower now, Gideon is in his chair with toys, but I still only have a window of time before he gets bored looking at the purple shower curtain, waiting for me to pop my head out.

  4. Airam says:

Awww … you miss us huh?
    We miss you too Egan!

  5. Amanda says:

I’m not good at these storytelling games. I always say lame things. Where’s that cat Patches? He’s good.
It’s only been, what, a week since you’ve been home? Don’t worry, Egan. Someone left a really good comment on your last post about finding a rhythm. You will. I know blogging is a big part of your life, so you will find a way to balance it. It’ll just take some time is all. In the meantime…let me leave a lame contribution to your story.
… so there was a boy who became a dad and he happened to have a blog…
…and the boy felt…different because he wasn’t able to blog with the same vigor he once did…
    Yeah…see…I got nothing. Lameness.

  6. Amanda says:

But I did say “vigor”…that’s pretty awesome. Vigor is a great word.

  7. brookem says:

    i dont get it.
    is this like mad libs?

  8. patches says:

and he became so overwhelmed by the responsibility of the whole experience. He began to see the world in a different life. Everything was so dangerous, with sharp corners and jagged edges everywhere he turned.
At times he worried, would he be able to protect his baby girl from the big bad world? It all seemed so heavy and burdensome, what if he couldn’t do enough, be enough, love enough, comfort enough? Then one day it happened. His internetz friends hit him between the eyes with a metaphorical two by four. The convinced him to approach life as it came, day by day, shower by shower, feeding by feeding and nap by nap.
Gradually the weight from his shoulders lightened. Not all at once, but pieces at a time, as life became more familiar, and small joys eclipsed worries…

  9. Amanda says:

See? I told you Patches was good.

  10. furiousball says:

What’s the fastest land animal on earth?
I like this ask questions in italics game.

  11. liv says:

no more questions! just sending lots of love! more photos! more! greedy liv! greedy liv love babies!

  12. Maggie says:

That Patches is one awesome story telling cat. And its all true.
    She’s a blessed baby.

  13. churlita says:

Now that my daughters are teenagers, I’m at the end of that cycle. it’s been so long since I’ve had any kind of time or freedom, I’m trying to remember what I did before I had children.

  14. anna'suncle says:

Are you gonna have another? I’m busy too, entertaining Anna’s grandma and being certified in 7 Habits….

  15. Perfect … just perfect!

  16. Nessa says:

Very funny. Kids and their assorted related duties sure do keep you busy.
I often laugh at my pre-child arrogance.

  17. scarlet hip says:

and he never left 450 comments on a blog post again…

  18. sprizee says:

Patches is my new favorite InternetS pal that I’ve never met.

  19. egan says:

*pixie* – my life is only changed temporarily. Ha, we’ll see about that.
Lling – hey you, how the heck are you? I put some new photos on the left margin of the blog. How’s Halifax yo? Good to hear from you for real. Yes, this is a far cry from the days of acting like a monkey.
*pixie* – those bouncy seats are really handy. We have a Baby Papasan and it worked like a charm yesterday. I turned on the music and vibrations and Anna was out like a light.
QofS – stop laughing at me or I might have to hurt you. I get the feeling you might like that though.
Airam – of course I miss all of my blog peeps. I have a hunch I will be back in full swing once I get back in my boring childless cubicle.
Amanda – actually things have been improving as Anna is now sleeping much more than she was. This is giving us (mom) some much needed rest. Certain things were never meant to be bitten, yep. Patches knows all and don’t be so hard on yourself.
Amanda – vigor is truly one of the last great words one can use for aggression. Thanks.
Brookem – you love three ways.
Patches – I had a feeling you would do this. I love it when you complete my posts. So much so I gave you a nod on the origina part of the post. You’re a true talent. I’ve missed reading your stuff, but alas… I will return.
Amanda – Patches is better than any driving cat.
Furiousball – “a dad with a runny diaper in his hand?”

  20. egan says:

Liv – hey you, look down the left side of this blog and you just might find a Baby Singe photo album. See how good I am.
Maggie – Patches sure is a talented feline. Rumor has it she can drive a car to visit other bloggers.
Churlita – this is what I have to look forward to right? Freedom is at a premium. The in-laws have been here relieving much of the stress, but today is their last day here.
Brother #3 – right now one is plenty, but I’m sure we’ll hear that question many many times in the next couple years. I’m leaning towards adoption next time around. Say hi to mom for me and make sure she treats you well.
Chaos Control – I’m glad you can relate. I do actually plan on answering these questions later on. Stay tuned.
Nessa – I have a feeling I will be laughing at that too. Like thinking I could maintain my blogging at my normal clip. Boy was I ever wrong.
Scarlet Hip – damn, who in the hell has time to leave 450 comments on one person’s blog? What a dork.
Sprizee – “Patches, this is Sprizee. Sprizee, this is the Poetic Cat”. I’m glad I could introduce the two of you.

  21. meno says:

despit what churlita says, there is no end to it, until you DIE!
    Feel better now.
Take your time, things will even out in a bit. Really.

  22. egan says:

Meno – you make things sound so much better. Thanks mamacita. Now I’m going to disappear for a while as I ponder what you typed.

  23. justrun says:

Yep, I’m pretty sure the days of your being certain you have any answers muchless all the answers are over. I bet it’s awesome! 🙂

  24. Michelle says:

Aw, lol. When my parents had my brother, it seemed like pure distress for the first two weeks. Then it mellowed out when his feedings and sleep patterns became regular.
Besides, no need to worry, you have the SuperDaddy gene!

  25. brandy says:

I’m out of it lately too, but sadly I can’t say it’s because I have a cute new baby to swaddle. Oh, and she is cute, I like the photos. And you know, I used to think that all new born babies were sort of weird looking- so wrinkly and angry. But Anna is cute. And you know how you know I’m telling you the truth and not just feeding you a line? Because you didn’t ask me if she was cute or not. And if you have to ask, and THEN people tell you she’s cute, it’s just not the same. Volunteering to discuss Anna’s cuteness is a guarantee that I think she’s adorable. Not that you have been eagerly waiting to hear what my verdict was on her lovely face, but now you have it just the same. Hmm. I haven’t been sleeping well. Can you tell? It is coming out in my comments?

  26. Good for Me says:

patches said it perfectly. just perfectly.

  27. liv says:

hey! patches is coming to my house tomorrow, yo! 🙂 don’t make us come out there and shape you up!

  28. Delton says:

…and his life got a whole lot more difficult, and interesting, and beautiful.
It’s never the same. Even when you return to cubedom, she’ll still be there in your mind. Pretty soon though, she’ll start making you art to hang up at work. I love that part! But you’re a ways away from that.
I wish I had any advice for you. The first few months were some of the hardest times I’ve ever experienced. I guess the one thing I’d say is that even though it all seems SO important, it really is hard to screw up the process.

  29. *pixie* says:

The baby papsan. That’s the one we have. Put on the music and vibrations and you’ve got about 8 minutes before it turns off. We hooked a few toys to the arm of the mirror for baby’s entertainment.

  30. Lynn says:

The thing that I learned about breastfeeding was that it shouldn’t hurt. With Twelve I would literally cry at the thought of nursing her…that is until I saw a “Lactation Consultant”. She worked with Twelve and I and all of the pain went away.
As far as the rest of it goes, new babyhood is so time consuming and exhausting. ‘They’ (the experts) say that things will settle down, and then there will be growth spurts at 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months. So you and the Missus put on your helmets and hold on, it’s a bumpy ride, and at the same time, the most thrilling ride of a lifetime. Breathe in and out, and things will get easier.

  31. Cheryl says:

So how ARE you doing? I am sure that even if you’re tired and a little stressed, it’s all worth it, right?

  32. qt says:

    I’m with liv. Need…more…baby…pics.

  33. Tall Chick says:

Patches said it so amazingly beautifully.
Hang in there Buh-DEE! (I should have made you watch Encino Man instead of Muhwin)

  34. Jay says:

Aw, she’s gorgeous, but then, she would be, wouldn’t she? I hope Mum is doing well and being treated like a queen whenever there’s a free second.

  35. celeste says:

The baby photos are SO adorable! I hope you’re doing OK. I hear the first couple of months and lack of sleep are the worst and then its smooth sailing 🙂

  36. egan says:

Justrun – I guess I never felt like I had all the answers, but we had a pretty sweet childless life. Now it’s not bitter, but a huge adjustment. You live your life for someone else. At least now we are.
Michelle – their sleep patterns mellow out? I wonder if their poop patterns mellow out too. You’re too kind about the genes thing.
Brandy – this comment rocks. I love it. It’s something I totally picture myself saying. Ramble on I say. I’m glad you find her cute unsolicited. That’s says a lot. How much do I owe you?
Good for Me – Patches is one damn wise kitty.
Liv – can you give Patches a big giant kiss for me? Thanks in advance.
Delton – I’m not really seeking advice, but I love what you had to say about how things progress and you get art to hang at work. That’s the kind of thing that warms my heart. Maybe they can nap for a really long time so I can respond to my blog comments? Yippee. Seriously, thanks for your insight as a dad.
*pixie* – the Baby Papasan is a lifesaver so far. The music puts me to sleep and I’m quite hyper.
Lynn – I’ve heard the same thing about breastfeeding and how it shouldn’t hurt. Well when the kid is born with a tooth it hurts like a mofo. It’s rare, but does happen. Anna has a tooth already and it doesn’t feel so good on the nipple. This is precisely why my wife deserves a cape or something. I do keep hearing the “it gets better, I promise you” and I all for it. Actually the young newborn weeks aren’t terrible. Not fun, but not horrendous.
Cheryl – in a word, “totally”. It’s definitely worth it. When you look at the pictures of her (located in the left margin) you can only smile. She’s largely not been fussy at all. Even today when her tongue got clipped. She’s a trooper baby like her mom.
QT – look in the left margin. I will add more as the days pass.
Tall Chick – I know, it will get better. Kick ass on Saturday woman!
Jay – I’m doing my best to pamper mom as much as possible. These c-sections are a bitch. No way around it. Thanks for confirming our baby is cute. We think so too.
Celeste – I’m doing alright. This is a big change, but I knew it going into this all. Sleep is for the birds and boring bloggers. Oops.

  37. PINK says:

    Gorgeous baby!
Thanks for blogging about this…it is a vicarious joy for the childless amongst us.
I’m sorry about the C-section. That is an added spanner as you say.
Your life will return to normal one day…maybe not soon…but you will get back to your sports in time.
Enjoy the rapid changes – this time goes so so fast.
    xx
    pinks

  38. Thomas says:

    Egan, remember me?

  39. ChickyBabe says:

Monkey Boy is in transition. Don’t be too hard on him.

  40. Airam says:

I tried leaving this comment last night but typepad was mean to me.
I love that you answered those questions you posed to yourself. I think that you’re doing a great job! And all-knowing CB is right! Don’t be too hard on yourself … you’ve never been a daddy before.
I love that picture you took too .. you look like you’re very much contemplating what your answers could be!!

  41. Great idea doing an interview like that 😉

  42. Amanda says:

Thank you for being honest with your answers monkey boy. I for one was most curious for certain reasons. Anyway, I appreciate you being frank with the answers. You rock. Oh, and if you want, I can beat down the lady in Babies R Us for you…there is nothing wrong with blogger-aunts doing these kinds of things. I mean, really…she really said “thing”? All babies are tiny! I say it to every baby I ever meet! But you don’t say “thing”! Good God Bono!
As for the shower question…I sometimes forget that I’m a bit of a freak with my 2 showers (sometimes 3) a day routine…you’re just fine with your 1 shower a day. At least you shower. I work with people who I swear dont shower at all…they just put on their axe body spray. Ugh.

  43. Jennifer says:

Things will settle into a routine, you’ll adjust, and life will get back to normal sooner than you know.
A new normal, to be sure, but normal, just the same.
Enjoy these frenetic times while they last! You’ll only get to enjoy them for 18-25 years or so!

  44. Tall Chick says:

    Eeeeeeegannnnnn!!
Uh, my brain is numb, but I wanted to comment. ^_^

  45. mez says:

ohhh look at you all blue and serious!
listening to sounds of the womb, fretting
    ?? Sounds a bit scary.

  46. kim says:

Stress and bliss all at the same time 🙂 It’s all new and difficult to balance at first, but you will be a pro in no time at all, I have faith in you!
Tell the Mrs that breast feeding is a really difficult thing for some babies and some mommies, don’t feel guilty if it doesn’t happen for you, its not the end of the world like they make it seem. I had 4 c-sections and although I looked like I could feed the world, I couldn’t breast feed one little tiny baby, try as I might each time.
Its so cool that you didn’t go back to work right away and you are home to share all this with your wife and daughter. Back in the day (cuz im old like that) daddies smiled and tried to help for a day or two and then went back to work and let the women folk handle all the stressful parts.
Soon you will be back to doing all the things you did before, except that peaceful dead to the world, worry free sleep thing, that is over forever! haha

  47. L says:

Thank you for being honest about the challenges of introducing a child into your life. It’s refreshing to see someone write about the difficult side of child rearing. I think it will help some people out there who are in the same situation to know that there isn’t something wrong with them for not loving every single sleep deprived moment of child rearing and for feeling the difficulty in being a parent. You offer an earnest and realistic view into parenthood. It’s this type of honesty and realism that will guide you in making solid decisions with and for your family.

  48. sprizee says:

I’m glad to her you’re doing okay. Take care of yourself and everything will fall into place.

  49. sizzle says:

hang in there. thinking of you!

  50. justrun says:

Oh wow, I’m sure when you’re in it it must feel so different but you really do sound like you all are doing well. I cannot imagine the change and the feeling (and I didn’t mean for my last comment to sound like you used to know things and now don’t, or whatever- I just meant the change. The whole thing.) Reading the new perspective and comparing it to the anticipation perspective of a few weeks ago is really something. Thanks for being as open as you are and sharing.

  51. patches says:

Just checking back. I think it’s nice you spend so much time off with Anna and Mrs. Les Singes. A lot of dads (and Moms) aren’t that lucky to have an extra hand getting their game on.
Thanks for the shout out. If you want the pic from the poetry friday post, email me the details on where to mail it.

  52. Diane Mandy says:

Again, I appreciate the posting you do during this very hectiv time. I find it informative and moving.

  53. Laurie says:

Awww, congrats to both of you. Anna is just beautiful!
Isn’t that first drive with kid in car the worst? Did you even know you could go that slow? LOL
Enjoy her. They grow up so dang fast. My first just pointed out to me that in less than one month she will be 12 1/2! Sigh.

  54. Nessa says:

Great answers. It sounds like you are doing a spectacular daddy job. Keep up the good work.

  55. sandra says:

Another huge congrats to you — for getting through and enjoying this first bit of time.

  56. egan says:

Pink – yeah, we’ve already realized how fast the past couple weeks have gone. It’s blissful and stressful wrapped into one.
Thomas – yes, I remember all Seattle bloggers. What’s up?
ChickyBabe – you could say that for reals. My life is so much different than before… or at least it feels that way.
Airam – I like posing questions and then answering them myself. It’s a talent to probe oneself so deeply. Now what were you saying about my photo?
Guilty Secret – well I had to do something since I heard the questions swirling about.
Amanda – maybe you can beat down the Babies R Us woman for me and I will beat down your co-workers? Deal? Axe body spray is a hit with the ladies or so I hear.
Jennifer – thanks for keeping it real about the timeline here. Once a parent, always a parent right?
Tall Chick – I can’t imagine why your brain is numb. Congrats friend for your new belt.
Mez – I’m a very very serious guy as you’ll learn very very soon. I’m glad you like the blue me. I was watching Anna while I snapped this photo at some god forsaken hour in the middle of the night.
Kim – thanks for your husband support. I would love to stay home longer, but someone has to appear busy so it might as well be me. It’s nice to get an alternative view on breastfeeding. I’m a bit sick and tired of the pro breastfeeding camp these days. Worry free sleep, damn is that ever true. I have had a really tough time sleeping the past few nights for that very reason. Sucky.
L – you’re welcome. Being a parent isn’t something I take lightly, but it does mean it’s stressful job to be so involved. I’m sure it will all payoff soon enough. Thanks for your support.
Sprizee – thanks friend. I’m taking care of myself as best as possible. Guess what though, our sewer line was completely clogged. Fun times.
Sizzle – thank you, I need all the positive vibes we can get for now.

  57. farmgirl19 says:

    Skipping showers just isn’t right!
Glad to hear you are adoring the baby and Mrs.

  58. brookem says:

hey egan. im glad you are doing some more smiling (and sleeping), and things sound like they are going well. also, glad to hear your timex is working, mine isn’t. you’ll get back into the the triathlon swing eventually my friend. you’re an ironman afterall.
    meow.

  59. brandy says:

Fingers aren’t binkies- might just be the cutest photo ever. And I get the Scrabbers reference now, I hadn’t looked at the photos since you updated them. A squeaker. And just when I thought she couldn’t get any cuter…

  60. Airam says:

Oh Egan I love her little toof!!!

  61. *pixie* says:

Tooth at birth?!? So rare. What a little overachiever already.

  62. You have an amazing ability to put everything into perspective and laugh right along with the tears..hang in there and know that every day is a gift for you to treasure….

  63. justrun says:

Hi! Just checking in I guess. Who knows why I felt the need to comment- thinking of all of you! Hoping you get some good moments of sleep. 🙂

  64. egan says:

Justrun – I didn’t take your comment as a bad thing. I like what you had to say and your compliments are quite nice too. Being a parent sure is a change. I’m curious as to how my perspective has changed over the past few weeks as well.
Patches – I will shoot you an email because I would love a copy of it. It’s a very fine work of art. It’s a damn good thing I seldom get sick because I have heaps of sick time available. It has been nice to smooth the transition too. You’re very deserving of a shout out and you know that. Liv didn’t even need to tell me this.
Diane Mandy – hey, how are you? Thanks, I really mean that. It has been so much more difficult to blog with a newborn, but I’m trying to keep it going. Once I get back to work, it might get back to “normal”.
Laurie – wow, you’re going to have a teenager very soon. I hear those are the good years to have kids. I know I was a very easy teenager. Ha, I’m sure she’ll be a gem. The first car drive was tough, but not as hard as the first time crossing a crosswalk with her in a stroller.
Nessa – all I can say is I’m doing my best to help my wife and daughter. I appreciate the kind words.
Sandra – thanks. It’s been a struggle at times, but it’s well worth it. We’re just about to leave and buy some more onesies.
Farmgirl19 – skipping showers is a skill I have mastered since I was a boy. I can look “fresh” though with my toothy grin.
Brookem – I can send you a Timex watch if you’re interested. Ironman, now that has a nice ring to it.
Brandy – she loves to squeak when she’s waking up. I’m glad you like that photo, it’s one of my faves, but then again I’m biased.

  65. egan says:

Airam – you may love the toof, but mom doesn’t love it on the nipple. That’s another story though. It is cute in appearance though.
*pixie* – yes, a tooth at birth. She’s months ahead of her time and we’re going to hold her to this elevated standard her whole life.
Princess Extraordinaire – aww, how kind of you. I’m not sure the laughter counts are where I’d like them to be, but it will return. The little girl is so damn cute.
Justrun – how sweet of you to comment again. I’m okay, I really am. It’s just an ongoing adjustment. You’re witnessing it first hand by the way I change my blogging. Oh, and also by the stories I share. Never worry about commenting too much on this blog. A new post is in the works.

  66. tori says:

Just checking in to see how you are doing, and to say that your daughter is so beautiful! Honestly. Like Brandy (?) I feel that it means something since you didn’t ask me what I thought of her. She truly is beautiful. I hope you are getting settled into your new life, and that things will be easier soon. Your wife is lucky to have such an awesome husband. My husband (not that he isn’t awesome in his own way) went back to work two days after I got home from the hospital after my first c-section. It was a challenge, that is for sure.

  67. CS says:

Overwhelming, isn’t it? It gets easier, but you don’t want to look ahead to that. This time may be exhausting but it is also magical. Having had one of each, I still can’t say which was harder to recover form. Of course, the C-section expereince was colored by the fact that I also had a toddler at home to take care of. Anyway, it’s good to hear how you are doing with the new babe.

  68. *pixie* says:

I just looked it up and 1 in 2000 babies are born with a tooth.

  69. Kale Rae says:

I want to know why bathing 6 times a week seems so problematic? How many times a week does the average person shower/bathe….I mean, 6 times a week seems pretty average to me….

  70. egan says:

Tori – ha, you and Brandy crack me up with your comments about Anna’s beauty. People (strangers) love to tell us “you did good”. That expression cracks me up big time. You say such nice things about me as a person and I like it.
CS – I can’t even imagine recovering from a c-section and having a toddler in the house. You get mad props from me.
*pixie* – ha, thanks for sharing this with me. I was curious about the odds. You rock mamacita.
Kale Rae – that’s exactly what I was wondering. I bathe once a day except for the weekend. I’m not really sure that’s a bad thing. Now if I workout, I will definitely shower before I slip in the sack. I’m glad we’re on the same page here.

  71. Amanda says:

Im late in seeing the tooth! How flippin’ adorable! Awww, Efo…she really is beautiful (you’re not getting tired of hearing that are you?)! And she’s growing so fast! How is that possible?

  72. Airam says:

Amanda – the tooth is adorable… but you should think about how it would feel on a newborn who loves nipples and doesn’t have great muscle control. i’m just saying. Has she grown? As a parent it’s hard to see her growth.
Airam – Anna was great today. She does really well on our daily outings. Mrs. Lessinges is doing good. Did I tell you c-sections are fun yet? She’s okay, but dreading doing work on her own when I head back to work. I’m going to cry a lot when that happens.
